How to type Z with accent on every device
Z rarely takes an accent in English, so keyboards tuck these away behind shortcuts. Here is the quickest path on each device, shown with ž. The same steps cover every z with accent mark on the page.
Windows, ALT code
Num Lock on. Hold Alt, type the code, release. Alt 0158 gives ž. Alt 0175 gives ż, the z with a dot on top. Alt 0179 gives ź. Every code sits in the table below.
Windows, Word (Alt+X and Ctrl shortcut)
In Word, type the hex and press Alt + X. So 017E then Alt + X becomes ž. The caron shortcut Ctrl + Shift + , then z works in many builds too.

Mac, Option key
There is no single Option combo for ž, so the easy route is to hold the z key and pick from the pop-up menu. For ż specifically, some layouts use Option + z.

Typing Z with accent on different language keyboards
These letters belong to Slavic and Baltic languages, so their keyboards are where they feel natural. Polish and Czech are the big two.
Polish keyboard
Polish leans on Z a lot. ż (dot above) is right Alt (AltGr) + z; ź (acute) is AltGr + x. Both appear constantly, as in żaba (frog) and źle (badly).
Czech & Slovak keyboards
The caron form ž has a spot on the number row of Czech and Slovak layouts, since it is an everyday letter, as in žena (woman).
Croatian & Slovenian keyboards
ž sits as a dedicated key beside the other caron letters č and š, used in names like Žižek.
Baltic keyboards
Latvian and Lithuanian both give ž a home key; it marks the “zh” sound in words like Lithuanian žmogus (person).
US-International keyboard (English speakers)
This layout will not produce ž or ż on its own. For occasional use, the ALT code or the copy grid above is the fastest option.

Each z with accent belongs to specific languages. Here is what each one means and where it is used.
ž, z with caron
The workhorse. ž carries a small “v” on top and sounds like the “s” in “measure”. It runs right across Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Croatian, Latvian and Lithuanian (žena woman, Dvořák-country place names). Of every z with accent, this is the one you will meet most.
ż, a z with a dot on top
One dot, sitting high. That is ż, a z with a dot on top, and it is firmly Polish (żaba frog, już already). It contrasts with ź, so the two are not swappable.
ź, z with acute
ź (z-acute) is also Polish, a softer sound than ż, heard in źle (badly) and gałąź (branch).
ẕ, a z with a line through it
Look for the bar beneath the letter. ẕ is the closest thing to a z with a line through it in standard text, a z with a line below, used mainly in transliteration and phonetics. The dot-below form ẓ appears in Semitic romanisation. Both are in the grid above.
A note on the letter z in cursive
People often search for the letter z in cursive after seeing ż or ź and wondering about the handwritten shape. Cursive is a handwriting style, not an accent, so the accented forms here are the printed characters; the letter z keeps its accent whether you write it upright or in a flowing hand.
