How to write a capital T in cursive

The cursive capital T is two strokes. Start the first stroke just below the top line, pull a tall stem straight down to the baseline, and finish with a small curve. Lift your pen, then add the second stroke: a soft wave sweeping to the right across the top. The capital T usually stands on its own and does not join to the next letter.

  1. Stem: start below the top line, come straight down to the baseline.
  2. Top: lift the pen, then sweep a wave to the right along the top line.

How to write a lowercase t in cursive

The lowercase t is taller than most small letters but does not reach the top line, it rises to just above the dotted midline. Start on the baseline, stroke up, retrace straight back down (no loop), and curve out to the right to join the next letter. The crossbar comes last.

  1. Start on the baseline and stroke up to just above the midline.
  2. Retrace straight down to the baseline, then curve out to the right.
  3. After the word is written, cross the stem at the midline.

Common mistakes to avoid

The golden rule: write the whole word first, then go back and cross your t's (and dot your i's). Crossing as you go breaks the flow.

t vs l: a lowercase t without its crossbar just looks like an l. Always add the cross.

T vs F: a capital T has no bar through the middle of the stem, that middle bar is what makes an F.

Don't loop the t: retrace the downstroke on the same line, a loop turns it into a different letter.

Joining the cursive t

Because the lowercase t exits to the right at the baseline, it links smoothly into the next letter. Practise it in real words: the, tree, time, cat, letter. Watch how the exit stroke flows into the letter that follows.
