How to write a capital K in cursive

The cursive K capital is written in two strokes. For the first, start at the top and pull a tall stroke down to the baseline for the spine. Lift the pen. For the second, start up near the top to the right, curve in to touch the spine at the middle, then swing back out and down to the baseline to make the leg. Because the capital K in cursive lifts the pen, take it one stroke at a time.

  1. Pull the tall spine down from the top to the baseline. Lift the pen.
  2. Curve in to touch the spine at the middle, then swing out and down to make the leg.

How to write a lowercase k in cursive

The lowercase k is a tall letter. Start on the baseline, swoop up to the top line in a loop like a cursive l, come back down, then make a small loop or arm that touches the middle and kicks out into a leg that reaches the baseline. The lowercase cursive K is a tall stem with a little arm and leg.

  1. Swoop up to the top line and back down for the tall stem.
  2. Make a small arm that touches the middle, then kick out into the leg down to the baseline.

Common mistakes to avoid

Keep the stem tall: the lowercase k reaches all the way to the top line, like l, b and h.

Touch the middle: the arm of the k should meet the stem around the midline, not the top.

Take the capital in two strokes: the cursive K capital lifts the pen between the spine and the arm-and-leg.

Do not make the leg too long: the leg of the k rests on the baseline, it does not dip below.

Joining the cursive k

The lowercase k finishes with its leg on the baseline, so it links into the next letter. Practise the cursive K in real words: kit, key, book, make, market. Notice how the leg leads the pen into whatever comes next.
