The fastest way to type an s with accent depends on your device and which character you need, the German ß, the s-caron š (an s with a line over it), or the s with dot below ṣ. The method for each platform is below. Every s with accent on this page works the same way.
Windows, ALT code
Hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on), then release Alt. Alt then 0154 gives š, Alt then 0223 gives the German ß, and Alt then 0347 gives ś. The full s with accent alt code list is in the ALT codes table below.
Windows, Word (Alt+X and Ctrl shortcut)
In Microsoft Word, type the Unicode hex then press Alt + X: type 0161 then Alt + X for š, or 00DF then Alt + X for ß. For ß there is also the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + & then s. See the shortcuts table.
Windows, emoji & symbol panel
Press Win + . (Windows key + period) to open the emoji panel, choose the Symbols tab, and pick š or ß.
Mac, Option key
For the German ß, press Option + s. For š, ś and the others, press and hold the s key for a pop-up menu of accented options and pick the one you need.
iPhone & iPad
On the on-screen keyboard, press and hold s. A pop-up shows ß, š, ś and more, slide your finger onto the one you want and release.
Android (Gboard / SwiftKey)
Press and hold s on the keyboard; a pop-up of accented variants appears. Slide to the accent you need and lift your finger.
Linux
Press Ctrl + Shift + U, type the Unicode hex (0161 for š, 00df for ß), then Enter. Or set a Compose key: Compose, then s, then s gives ß.
HTML & web

Typing S with accent on different language keyboards
Several s with accent characters are native to European keyboards. If you type German, Czech, Polish or Turkish often, switching layout is the quickest way to reach them.
German keyboard
German keyboards have a dedicated ß key (the eszett or “sharp s”), to the right of the 0 key. The German ß stands for a double “s” sound, as in Straße (street) and Fußball (football). It is a genuine German s letter, not an accent.
Czech, Slovak & Croatian keyboards
These layouts have a dedicated š key (the s-caron, an s with a line over it shaped like a small “v”), as in Škoda and Tomáš. It sounds like English “sh”.
Polish keyboard
Polish keyboards produce ś (s-acute) with right Alt (AltGr) + s, as in Śląsk (Silesia).
Turkish & Romanian keyboards
Turkish keyboards include ş (s-cedilla) as a dedicated key, as in şeker (sugar); Romanian uses the comma form ș, as in București.
US-International keyboard (English speakers)
The US-International layout does not produce š or ß directly, so for these an ALT code or the copy grid above is usually the quickest option for English speakers.

ß, the German sharp s (eszett)
The German ß, called the eszett or “sharp s”, stands for a double “s” and is used only in German (Straße street, Fußball football, weiß white). It is a real letter of the German s family, not an accented s; its capital form is ẞ. Many people search for it as the “German B” because of its shape.
š, s with caron (an s with a line over it)
The s-caron, š, has a small “v”-shaped mark on top, which is why it is often described as an s with a line over it. It sounds like English “sh” and is used across Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Croatian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian (Škoda, Tomáš).
ś, s with acute
ś (s-acute) is Polish (Śląsk Silesia, środa Wednesday), a softer “sh”-like sound.
ş, ș, s with cedilla and comma
ş (s-cedilla) is Turkish (şeker sugar) and older Romanian; the correct modern Romanian form is ș (s-comma), as in București (Bucharest).
ṣ, s with dot below
The s with dot below, ṣ, is used mainly in the transliteration of Sanskrit, Arabic and other languages (for a retroflex or emphatic “s”). The dot-above form ṡ appears in old Irish orthography. Both are copyable from the grid at the top.
