The fastest way to put an accent over e depends on your device. Whether you need an accented e for French, Spanish or Portuguese, the method for each platform is below, using é (the e acute) as the example. Every e with accent on this page works the same way.
Windows, ALT code
Hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on), then release Alt. For example, Alt then 0233 gives é, and Alt then 0232 gives è. The full list is in the ALT codes table below.
Windows, Word (Alt+X and Ctrl shortcut)
In Microsoft Word, type the Unicode hex then press Alt + X: type 00E9 then Alt + X for é. Word also has a shortcut: Ctrl + ' (apostrophe), release, then e → é. See the shortcuts table.
Windows, emoji & symbol panel
Press Win + . (Windows key + period) to open the emoji panel, choose the Symbols tab, and pick the accented letter.
Mac, Option key
Hold Option + e (this arms the acute accent), release, then press e → é. For the others: Option + ` then e → è; Option + i then e → ê; Option + u then e → ë. You can also press and hold the e key for a pop-up menu of accented options and pick the number shown.
iPhone & iPad
On the on-screen keyboard, press and hold e. A row of accented options (é è ê ë ē ė ę) appears, slide your finger to the one you want and release.
Android (Gboard / SwiftKey)
Press and hold e on the keyboard; a pop-up of accented variants appears. Slide to the accent you need and lift your finger.
Linux
Press Ctrl + Shift + U, type the Unicode hex (00e9 for é), then Enter. Or set a Compose key: Compose, then ', then e gives é.
HTML & web

Typing E with accent on different language keyboards
The accented e is native to several European keyboards, where putting an accent over e is far quicker than an ALT code. The French e in particular has its own dedicated keys. If you type in these languages often, switching layout is usually the best method.
French keyboard (AZERTY)
French AZERTY has dedicated keys: é is on the 2 key, è on the 7 key, and ê/ë are made with the circumflex/diaeresis dead key (next to P), then e. No ALT code needed.
Spanish keyboard
Spanish keyboards use a dead acute key (the ´, right of Ñ): press it, then e → é. Spanish mainly uses é (never è), so this one dead key covers it.
Portuguese keyboard
Portuguese layouts have dead keys for acute, grave, circumflex and tilde. Press the acute dead key then e for é, or the circumflex dead key then e for ê (as in você).
Italian keyboard
Italian keyboards have dedicated è and é keys near Enter. Italian uses both the grave (caffè) and acute (perché).
US-International keyboard (English speakers)
If you write English but need accents occasionally, enable the US-International layout in Windows. Then press ' (apostrophe) then e → é, or ` then e → è. This keeps your familiar QWERTY layout while adding dead-key accents.

Each e with accent belongs to specific languages. Here is what each one means and where it is used.
é, e with acute (e accent aigu)
The French e known as e accent aigu, the e acute, é, is the most common accented letter in Western Europe. In French it marks a closed “ay” sound (café, résumé, fiancé, éléphant); in Spanish it shows which syllable is stressed (bebé, café, corazón has none but árbol shows the pattern); and it is standard in Portuguese, Italian (perché), Hungarian, Czech and Icelandic. English borrows it in words like café, cliché and Pokémon.
è, e with grave
è marks an open “eh” sound in French (père, mère, très) and Italian (caffè, and è meaning “is”). It also appears in Catalan.
ê, e with circumflex
ê appears in French (fête, être, forêt, the circumflex often marks a lost historical “s”, so forêt was once “forest”) and in Portuguese (você, três).
ë, e with diaeresis
ë tells you to pronounce the vowel separately from the one before it, as in Noël, the name Zoë, and Dutch ideeën (ideas). It also appears in Albanian, where it is a common everyday vowel.
ě, ē, ę and others
ě (e-caron) is Czech (děti, children). ē (e-macron) marks a long vowel in Latvian, Lithuanian and romanised Japanese and Māori. ę (e-ogonek) is a nasal vowel in Polish (język, language). The Vietnamese forms (ẹ, ẻ, ẽ, ế, ề, ể, ễ, ệ) combine tone marks with the vowel.
