The fastest way to put an accent over i depends on your device. Whether you need an accented i for Spanish, French or the i with two dots ï, the method for each platform is below, using í (i acute) as the example. Every i with accent on this page works the same way.
Windows, ALT code
Hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on), then release Alt. For example, Alt then 0237 gives í, Alt then 0236 gives ì, and Alt then 0239 gives ï (the i with two dots). The full i with accent alt code list is in the ALT codes table below.
Windows, Word (Alt+X and Ctrl shortcut)
In Microsoft Word, type the Unicode hex then press Alt + X: type 00ED then Alt + X for í. Word also has a shortcut: Ctrl + ' (apostrophe), release, then i, giving í. See the shortcuts table.
Windows, emoji & symbol panel
Press Win + . (Windows key + period) to open the emoji panel, choose the Symbols tab, and pick the accented letter.
Mac, Option key
Hold Option + e (this arms the acute), release, then press i, giving í. For the others: Option + ` then i gives ì; Option + i then i gives î; Option + u then i gives ï. You can also press and hold the i key for a pop-up menu.
iPhone & iPad
On the on-screen keyboard, press and hold i. A row of accented options (ì í î ï ĩ ī į) appears, slide your finger to the one you want and release.
Android (Gboard / SwiftKey)
Press and hold i on the keyboard; a pop-up of accented variants appears. Slide to the accent you need and lift your finger.
Linux
Press Ctrl + Shift + U, type the Unicode hex (00ed for í), then Enter. Or set a Compose key: Compose, then ', then i gives í.

Typing I with accent on different language keyboards
The accented i is native to several European keyboards, where putting an accent over i is far quicker than an ALT code. If you type in these languages often, switching layout is usually the best method.
Spanish keyboard
On a Spanish keyboard, the i with accent Spanish speakers need is í: press the dead acute key ( ´ , right of Ñ ), then i, giving í, as in día (day) and sí (yes).
French keyboard (AZERTY)

ì, i with grave
