Windows, ALT code
Hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on), then release Alt. For example, Alt then 0250 gives ú, Alt then 0249 gives ù, and Alt then 0252 gives ü (the u with two dots). The full u with accent alt code list is in the ALT codes table below.
Windows, Word (Alt+X and Ctrl shortcut)
In Microsoft Word, type the Unicode hex then press Alt + X: type 00FA then Alt + X for ú. Word also has a shortcut: Ctrl + ' (apostrophe), release, then u, giving ú; for ü use Ctrl + Shift + : then u. See the shortcuts table.
Windows, emoji & symbol panel
Press Win + . (Windows key + period) to open the emoji panel, choose the Symbols tab, and pick the accented letter.
Mac, Option key
Hold Option + e (this arms the acute), release, then press u, giving ú. For the others: Option + ` then u gives ù; Option + i then u gives û; Option + u then u gives ü (the u umlaut). You can also press and hold the u key for a pop-up menu.
iPhone & iPad
On the on-screen keyboard, press and hold u. A row of accented options (ù ú û ü ũ ū) appears, slide your finger to the one you want and release.

Typing U with accent on different language keyboards
The accented u is native to several European keyboards, where putting an accent over u is far quicker than an ALT code. The German u umlaut ü in particular has its own dedicated key. If you type in these languages often, switching layout is usually the best method.
German keyboard
German keyboards have a dedicated ü key (right of P), since ü (the u umlaut, the u with two dots) is a core German vowel, as in über, Müller and Zürich. No ALT code needed.
Spanish keyboard
Spanish keyboards use a dead acute key ( ´ , right of Ñ ): press it, then u, giving ú, as in música. For ü (as in pingüino), press Shift + the dead diaeresis key, then u.
French keyboard (AZERTY)
French AZERTY has a dedicated ù key (right of M), used in the common word où (where). For û, use the circumflex dead key (next to P) then u, as in sûr (sure).
Hungarian keyboard
Hungarian keyboards include ú, ü and the double-acute ű as dedicated keys, since all three are distinct letters, as in út (road) and tű (needle).
US-International keyboard (English speakers)

The u umlaut, ü, also called the u with two dots, is a core vowel in German (über, Müller, Zürich, Tür door), Hungarian and Turkish. In Spanish it appears in pingüino and vergüenza to show the u is pronounced. This is the most searched accented u.
ú, u with acute
The u acute, ú, marks a stressed vowel in Spanish (música, último last), and also in Portuguese, Czech, Icelandic and Irish (Dún).
ù, u with grave
ù is Italian (più more, giù down) and French (où where, the only common French word that uses it).
û, u with circumflex
û appears in French (sûr sure, coût cost, août August) and in Kurdish and Welsh.
ū, ů, ű and more
ū (u-macron) marks a long vowel in romanised Japanese, Latvian, Lithuanian and Māori. ů (u-ring) is specifically Czech (dům house). ű (u-double-acute) is Hungarian (tű needle). The tone-marked forms ǔ ǖ ǘ ǚ ǜ are used in Chinese Pinyin (lǜ green, nǚ woman), and the horned ư family is Vietnamese.
