How to write a capital B in cursive
Watch the animation, print the free worksheet, and follow the step-by-step guide below, plus the accent forms of B from around the world.
The cursive capital B begins at the top with a tall downstroke, then loops back up to form two stacked curves on the right, a smaller upper bowl and a larger lower bowl. Keep the pen moving in one flowing motion: down the spine, up and around the top bump, then down and around the bottom bump, finishing with a small tail at the baseline.
- Start at the top, pull the spine straight down to the baseline.
- Retrace up, curve out to make the top bump, then the larger bottom bump, and finish at the baseline.
How to write a lowercase b in cursive
The lowercase b is a tall letter. Start on the baseline, stroke up to the top line, come straight back down the same line, then curve around to the right to make the bowl, ending with a small exit stroke near the midline that joins to the next letter.
- Start on the baseline and stroke up to the top line.
- Retrace down, then curve right to close the bowl and exit toward the next letter.
Common mistakes to avoid
Keep b tall: the lowercase b reaches all the way to the top line, it is not a short letter like a or c.
Close the bowl: make sure the round part of the b meets the stem, or it can look like an l with a stray mark.
b vs d: the bowl of a b sits on the right of the stem; if it is on the left, you have written a d. Watch the direction.
One motion: the cursive b flows from the up-stroke into the bowl without lifting the pen.
Joining the cursive b
Because the lowercase b finishes with a small exit stroke near the midline, it links into the next letter from up high rather than from the baseline. Practise it in real words: bat, bed, big, able, rabbit. Notice how the exit carries across the top into the next letter.

Frequently asked questions
How do you write a capital B in cursive?
Start at the top and pull the spine straight down to the baseline, then retrace up and make two curves on the right, a smaller top bump and a larger bottom bump, finishing at the baseline.
How do you write a lowercase b in cursive?
Start on the baseline, stroke up to the top line, retrace down, then curve right to form the bowl and exit near the midline toward the next letter.
Why does my cursive b look like an l?
The bowl is not closing against the stem. Make sure the curved part loops back and touches the upright line so the letter reads as a b, not an l with a stray mark.
How is a cursive b different from a cursive d?
The bowl of a b sits to the right of the upright stroke, while the bowl of a d sits to the left. Same shape, mirrored, so watch which side the round part goes.
