How to type A with accent on every device
The fastest way to put an accent over a depends on your device. Whether you need an accented a for Spanish, Portuguese, French or a Scandinavian å, the method for each platform is below, using á (the a acute) as the example. Every a with accent on this page works the same way.
Windows, ALT code
Hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on), then release Alt. For example, Alt then 0225 gives á, Alt then 0224 gives à, and Alt then 0229 gives å. The full list is in the ALT codes table below.
Windows, Word (Alt+X and Ctrl shortcut)
In Microsoft Word, type the Unicode hex then press Alt + X: type 00E1 then Alt + X for á. Word also has a shortcut: Ctrl + ' (apostrophe), release, then a → á. See the shortcuts table.
Windows, emoji & symbol panel
Press Win + . (Windows key + period) to open the emoji panel, choose the Symbols tab, and pick the accented letter.
Mac, Option key
Hold Option + e (this arms the acute), release, then press a → á. For the others: Option + ` then a → à; Option + i then a → â; Option + u then a → ä; Option + n then a → ã. You can also press and hold the a key for a pop-up menu.
iPhone & iPad
On the on-screen keyboard, press and hold a. A row of accented options (à á â ä ã å ā) appears, slide your finger to the one you want and release.
Android (Gboard / SwiftKey)
Press and hold a on the keyboard; a pop-up of accented variants appears. Slide to the accent you need and lift your finger.
Linux
Press Ctrl + Shift + U, type the Unicode hex (00e1 for á), then Enter. Or set a Compose key: Compose, then ', then a gives á.
HTML & web
Use the named entity á or the numeric entity á for á. Every character's codes are in the technical codes table.
Excel & Google Sheets
Use =UNICHAR(225) for á, or the matching decimal from the ALT-code table for any other A variant.
Typing A with accent on different language keyboards
The accented a is native to several European keyboards, where putting an accent over a is far quicker than an ALT code. If you type in these languages often, switching layout is usually the best method.
Spanish keyboard
Spanish keyboards use a dead acute key (the ´, right of Ñ): press it, then a → á. Spanish uses á to mark stress, as in mamá and rápido.
Portuguese keyboard
Portuguese layouts have dead keys for acute, grave, circumflex and tilde. Press the tilde dead key then a for ã (as in São Paulo), or the acute dead key then a for á.
Danish, Norwegian & Swedish keyboards
Scandinavian keyboards have a dedicated å key (to the right of P), because å is a full letter of the alphabet, not an accent, as in Ångström and Norwegian vår (spring).
German keyboard
German keyboards have a dedicated ä key (right of P), since ä (a-umlaut) is a core German vowel, as in Mädchen (girl) and Bäcker (baker).
US-International keyboard (English speakers)
If you write English but need accents occasionally, enable the US-International layout in Windows. Then press ' then a → á, ` then a → à, or ~ then a → ã. This keeps your familiar QWERTY layout while adding dead-key accents.
Keyboard shortcuts for A with accent (Microsoft Word)
