How to write a capital A in cursive
The cursive capital A is written as one flowing stroke. Start just below the top line, curve up and over to the left to form a round bowl, come down and around the bottom, then back up the right side and down into a stem with a small exit curve. Keep the pen on the paper the whole way.
- Begin near the top, curve left and around to form the bowl.
- Come back up the right side, then down into the stem and flick out to the right.
How to write a lowercase a in cursive
The lowercase a is the same idea, smaller. Start just below the midline, make a small round bowl anticlockwise, then bring the stroke up the right side and down again, finishing with an exit curve that joins to the next letter.
- Start below the midline and loop anticlockwise to make the bowl.
- Come up the right side, back down, and curve out to join the next letter.
Common mistakes to avoid
Close the bowl: make sure the round part meets the stem, or the a looks like a u or an open loop.
Anticlockwise start: the bowl is drawn to the left first, not to the right, so the stroke flows correctly into the stem.
a vs o: the a has a straight stem on its right side; without it, the letter reads as an o.
Keep it one motion: the cursive a does not lift the pen, it is a single continuous stroke.
Joining the cursive a
The lowercase a exits to the right at the baseline, so it links straight into the next letter. Practise it inside real words: and, cat, play, apple, banana. Watch how the exit stroke carries into whatever comes next.

Frequently asked questions
How do you write a capital A in cursive?
In one stroke: curve up and left to make a round bowl, come around the bottom, then up the right side and down into a stem with a small exit flick.
How do you write a lowercase a in cursive?
Start below the midline, loop anticlockwise to make a small bowl, then come up the right side, back down, and curve out to join the next letter.
Is the cursive a one stroke or two?
One continuous stroke. Unlike printing, you do not lift the pen, the bowl and the stem are drawn in a single motion.
Why does my cursive a look like an o?
The a needs a clear straight stem on its right side. If the stroke curves all the way round without that stem, it reads as an o.
