How to type Y with accent on every device
Different devices, different tricks. The letter Y takes accents less often than the vowels, so most keyboards hide these behind a shortcut rather than a dedicated key. Here is the shortest route on each platform, using the acute ý as the example. Everything applies to the other accented y forms as well.
Windows, ALT code
Turn on Num Lock. Hold Alt, type the code on the number pad, release. Alt 0253 gives ý. Alt 0255 gives ÿ, the y with dots. Capital Ý is Alt 0221. Look up any y with accent alt code in the table below.
Windows, Word (Alt+X and Ctrl shortcut)
Inside Word, type the hex code and hit Alt + X. So 00FD then Alt + X becomes ý. Prefer a shortcut? Ctrl + ' then y also works for the acute y. Capitals follow the same pattern with a capital Y.
Windows, emoji & symbol panel
No number pad? Press Win + . to open the emoji and symbol picker, switch to the Symbols tab, and click the character you want.
Mac, Option key
The acute lives on Option + e. Arm it, then press y for ý. For the y with dots ÿ, use Option + u then y. Holding the y key also opens a small menu of accented choices.
iPhone & iPad
Touch and hold the y key. A short row of options slides up, ý, ÿ and a few more. Drag to your pick and let go.
Android (Gboard / SwiftKey)
Same idea as iOS: press and hold y, then slide onto the accented variant in the pop-up.
Linux
Use the Unicode entry: Ctrl + Shift + U, type 00fd, press Enter. A Compose key works too, Compose then ' then y.
HTML & web
For the web, ý is ý or ý, and ÿ is ÿ. The technical table lists the rest.
Excel & Google Sheets
Drop =UNICHAR(253) into a cell for ý. Swap in the decimal from the ALT-code table for any other variant.
Typing Y with accent on different language keyboards
The accented y is a niche letter, so only a handful of keyboards give it a home key. Welsh and Icelandic are the two that use it most.
Welsh keyboard
Welsh treats Y as a vowel, so the circumflex form ŷ turns up often (as in tŷ, house). A Welsh layout makes ŷ, ẃ-style circumflex letters with a dead key, then y.
Icelandic keyboard
Icelandic has a dedicated ý key. The acute y is a normal letter there, seen in words like ýmis (various).
Czech & Slovak keyboards
Both languages use ý as a long vowel. On their layouts it sits on the number row or behind the acute dead key, as in býk (bull).
French (for ÿ)
French barely uses ÿ, but it survives in a few place names such as L'Haÿ-les-Roses. There is no dedicated key; a dead diaeresis then y produces it.
US-International keyboard (English speakers)
Handy for occasional use. Press ' then y for ý, or Shift + " then y for the y with two lines above, ÿ.
Keyboard shortcuts for Y with accent (Microsoft Word)
In Word and most Office apps, hold the combination, release it, then press y (or Y for a capital).
| Accent letter | Keyboard shortcut |
|---|---|
| ý, Ý | Ctrl + ' (apostrophe), then y or Y |
| ÿ, Ÿ | Ctrl + Shift + : (colon), then y or Y |
| ŷ, Ŷ | Ctrl + Shift + ^ (caret), then y or Y |
| ỹ, Ỹ | Ctrl + Shift + ~ (tilde), then y or Y |
Languages that use Y with accent, with examples
Each y with accent belongs to specific languages. Here is what each one means and where it is used.
ý, the acute y
Start with the common one. The acute y, ý, marks a long vowel in Czech and Slovak (býk, bull), and it is a regular letter in Icelandic and Faroese. Welsh uses it too. It is the accented y most people are hunting for.
ÿ, the y with dots (diaeresis)
Two little dots on top. That is ÿ, the y with dots, sometimes described as a y with two lines above it or a y umlaut. It is rare. You will spot it in Dutch, in the odd French surname, and in the place name L'Haÿ-les-Roses near Paris.
ŷ, the y with circumflex
This one belongs to Welsh, where Y does duty as a vowel. The circumflex ŷ appears in words like tŷ (house) and ŷd (corn).
ȳ, a y with a line over it (macron)
A flat bar across the top marks a long vowel. The macron form ȳ, literally a y with a line over it, shows up in Latin teaching texts, in linguistics, and in some romanisation systems. The Greek name for the letter, Ypsilon, is why classical scholars run into these forms so often.
The Vietnamese tone forms
Vietnamese stacks tone marks onto y: ỳ, ỵ, ỷ and ỹ. Each dot, hook or tilde signals a different pitch. All of them, plus every capital Y with accent, sit in the copy grid at the top of this page.
Y with accent , full ALT code list
Every y with accent has a Windows code. Hold Alt, type the number on the keypad, release. Simple as that.

Y with accent, quick answers
How do I type ý on my keyboard?
Windows: Alt + 0253. Mac: Option + e, then y. Phone: press and hold y. Or just click it in the grid above. Any y with accent mark copies the same way.

The ones you are most likely to need: ý = Alt 0253, ÿ = Alt 0255, and capital Ý = Alt 0221. The full table has every y with accent alt code.
What is the y with two dots called?
That is ÿ. People call it the y with dots, a y with two lines, or a y umlaut. It is really a y with a diaeresis, and it is uncommon in everyday English.
How do I type a capital Y with accent?
