How to write a capital P in cursive

The cursive P capital starts with a tall stroke from the top down to the baseline, then loops back up to form a rounded bowl on the upper right. Written in one flowing motion, the capital P in cursive is a spine with a bowl at the top.

  1. Pull the tall spine down from the top to the baseline.
  2. Loop back up and round out the bowl on the upper right.

How to write a lowercase p in cursive

The lowercase p is a descender, so it dips below the baseline. Start at the midline, stroke straight down below the baseline for the stem, come back up the same line, then curve around to the right to make the bowl and exit toward the next letter. The lowercase cursive P has a tail below the line and a bowl on the right.

  1. Stroke down below the baseline for the stem, then back up.
  2. Curve right to close the bowl and exit toward the next letter.

Common mistakes to avoid

Let the stem drop below the line: the p is a descender, so its stem goes below the baseline. Do not stop it on the line.

Close the bowl: make sure the round part of the p meets the stem, or it looks like an unfinished loop.

Bowl on the right: the bowl of a p sits to the right of the stem, at the top. If it sits low or left, the letter reads wrong.

Keep it one motion: the lowercase cursive P flows from the stem into the bowl without lifting the pen.

Joining the cursive p

The lowercase p exits to the right from the bowl, so it links into the next letter. Practise the cursive P in real words: pan, cup, open, apple, happy. Notice how the exit flows into whatever comes next.
