How to type O with accent on every device
The fastest way to put an accent over o depends on your device. Whether you need an accented o for Spanish, Portuguese, French, a German ö or a Scandinavian ø, the method for each platform is below, using ó (the o acute) as the example. Every o with accent on this page works the same way.
Windows, ALT code
Hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on), then release Alt. For example, Alt then 0243 gives ó, Alt then 0242 gives ò, Alt then 0246 gives ö, and Alt then 0248 gives ø. The full list is in the ALT codes table below.
Windows, Word (Alt+X and Ctrl shortcut)
In Microsoft Word, type the Unicode hex then press Alt + X: type 00F3 then Alt + X for ó. Word also has a shortcut: Ctrl + ' (apostrophe), release, then o, giving ó. See the shortcuts table.
Windows, emoji & symbol panel
Press Win + . (Windows key + period) to open the emoji panel, choose the Symbols tab, and pick the accented letter.
Mac, Option key
Hold Option + e (this arms the acute), release, then press o, giving ó. For the others: Option + ` then o gives ò; Option + i then o gives ô; Option + u then o gives ö; Option + n then o gives õ; Option + o gives ø. You can also press and hold the o key for a pop-up menu.
iPhone & iPad
On the on-screen keyboard, press and hold o. A row of accented options (ò ó ô ö õ ō ø œ) appears, slide your finger to the one you want and release.
Android (Gboard / SwiftKey)
Press and hold o on the keyboard; a pop-up of accented variants appears. Slide to the accent you need and lift your finger.
Linux
Press Ctrl + Shift + U, type the Unicode hex (00f3 for ó), then Enter. Or set a Compose key: Compose, then ', then o gives ó.

Typing O with accent on different language keyboards
The accented o is native to several European keyboards, where putting an accent over o is far quicker than an ALT code. If you type in these languages often, switching layout is usually the best method.
Spanish keyboard
Spanish keyboards use a dead acute key (the ´, right of Ñ): press it, then o, giving ó. Spanish uses ó to mark stress, as in corazón (heart) and canción (song).
Portuguese keyboard
Portuguese layouts have dead keys for acute, grave, circumflex and tilde. Press the tilde dead key then o for õ (as in João, limões), or the circumflex dead key then o for ô (as in avô, grandfather).
German keyboard
German keyboards have a dedicated ö key (right of L), since ö (o-umlaut) is a core German vowel, as in schön (beautiful) and Köln (Cologne).
Danish & Norwegian keyboards
Danish and Norwegian keyboards have a dedicated ø key (right of L), because ø is a full letter of the alphabet, not an accent, as in søster (sister) and the name Ørsted.
US-International keyboard (English speakers)
If you write English but need accents occasionally, enable the US-International layout in Windows. Then press ' then o for ó, ` then o for ò, or ~ then o for õ. This keeps your familiar QWERTY layout while adding dead-key accents.

ó, o with acute
The o acute, ó, shows stress in Spanish (corazón heart, canción song), and in Polish it sounds like “u”, as in Kraków and Góra. It is also used in Portuguese, Czech, Hungarian and Icelandic.
ò, o with grave
ò is Italian (però but, ciò that) and Catalan.
ô, o with circumflex
ô appears in French (hôtel, côte coast, drôle funny) and Portuguese (avô grandfather, pôr to put).
ö, o with umlaut / diaeresis
ö is a full vowel in German (schön beautiful, Köln Cologne), Swedish, Finnish, Hungarian and Turkish.
õ, o with tilde
The o with tilde, õ, is nasal in Portuguese (João, limões lemons, põe puts) and a distinct vowel in Estonian.
ø, ō and more
ø is a separate letter in Danish and Norwegian (søster sister, Ørsted). ō (o-macron) marks a long vowel in romanised Japanese (Tōkyō, Ōsaka), Māori and Latin. The ligature œ is used in French (cœur heart, œuf egg), and ő (o-double-acute) is Hungarian.
