How to write a capital O in cursive
The cursive O capital is a large, graceful oval. Start near the top, curve up and to the left, sweep all the way around counter-clockwise to close the oval, then finish with a small loop or flourish at the top. The capital O in cursive is one smooth, continuous stroke.
- Start near the top and curve left, sweeping around counter-clockwise.
- Close the oval and finish with a small loop at the top.
How to write a lowercase o in cursive
The lowercase o is a small round letter. Start just below the midline, curve up and to the left, come around counter-clockwise to close the circle, then add a small tail at the top-right that leads to the next letter. The lowercase cursive O is a neat closed circle with an exit at the top.
- Curve up and left, then around counter-clockwise to close the circle.
- Add a small tail at the top-right toward the next letter.
Common mistakes to avoid
Close the circle: the o must join back to itself at the top, or it looks like an a or a u.
Exit from the top: the o joins to the next letter from the top-right, not the baseline, which is different from most letters.
Keep it round: the cursive O is a smooth oval, not a pointed or lopsided shape.
Go counter-clockwise: start the curve to the left, the same direction as a, c, d and g.
Joining the cursive o
The lowercase o exits from the top, so it links into the next letter from up high rather than the baseline. Practise the cursive O in real words: on, dog, good, book, moon. Notice how the top exit carries into whatever comes next.

Start near the top, curve left and sweep around counter-clockwise to close a large oval, then finish with a small loop at the top. The capital O in cursive is one smooth stroke.

Why does the cursive o join from the top?
The o closes at the top, so its exit stroke leaves from the top-right. That is why words like oa or ov connect high up rather than at the baseline.
