How to write a capital J in cursive

The cursive J capital is a tall, looping letter that dips below the baseline. Start near the top, loop over, then bring a long curved stroke all the way down below the line and hook it back to the left. The capital J in cursive is one of the taller capitals, so give it plenty of room.

  1. Start near the top and loop over.
  2. Bring the long stroke down below the baseline and hook it back to the left.

How to write a lowercase j in cursive

The lowercase j is written in two steps. First, start at the midline, stroke down through the baseline into a loop that swings back up, just like the tail of a g or y. Then lift the pen and add a dot above the stem. The dot on the cursive J lowercase is always added last.

  1. Stroke down from the midline, through the baseline, into a loop that swings back up.
  2. Lift the pen and add the dot above the stem.

Common mistakes to avoid

Dot it last: like the i, write the word first and add the dot on the j afterward.

Let the tail drop below the line: the j is a descender, so its loop dips below the baseline. Do not stop it on the line.

j vs g: the j has a dot above and a straighter body, while the g has a round bowl on top. Watch the top of the letter.

Keep the dot close: the dot on the cursive J sits just above the stem, not high up the page.

Joining the cursive j

The lowercase j loops back up to the baseline, so it links into the next letter. Practise the cursive J in real words: jam, joy, jump, enjoy, major. Remember to go back and add the dot after the word is finished.
