How to write a capital H in cursive
The cursive H capital is written in two strokes. For the first, start just below the top line, hook up slightly, then pull a curved line down to the baseline like a slanted candy cane, and lift the pen. For the second, start at the top to the right of the first stroke, slant straight down to the baseline, come back up the same line about halfway, and add a small loop or connector that links the two parts at the middle line. Because the capital H in cursive lifts the pen, take it one stroke at a time.
- Hook up, then curve down to the baseline like a candy cane. Lift the pen.
- Slant down from the top on the right, back up halfway, and add the connector at the middle.
How to write a lowercase h in cursive
The lowercase h is a tall letter written in one motion. Start on the baseline and swoop all the way up to the top line in a tall loop like a cursive l, bring the pen straight back down the same path to the baseline, then go up slightly and make a small hump that touches the middle, trailing out to the right to join the next letter. The lowercase cursive H is a tall loop plus a hump.
- Swoop up from the baseline to the top line in a tall loop, then straight back down.
- Go up a little and make the hump touching the middle, then trail out to the right.
Common mistakes to avoid
Keep the loop tall: the first part of the lowercase h reaches all the way to the top line, like l, b and k.
Do not make two separate humps: the h has one tall stem and one small hump, not two bumps like an m.
Take the capital in two strokes: the cursive H capital lifts the pen between the hook and the parallel line.
Touch the middle: the hump of the lowercase h should reach about the midline, not the top.
Joining the cursive h
The lowercase h trails out to the right from the hump, so it links smoothly into the next letter. Practise the cursive H in real words: hat, the, house, this, with. Notice how the exit stroke leads into whatever follows.
