How to write a capital G in cursive
The cursive G capital is an elegant, flowing letter. Start low near the baseline, sweep up and to the right in a tall curve, add a small loop near the top, then bring the stroke down and around into a large lower bowl that curls back. Because the capital G in cursive has several curves, follow the animation slowly the first few times.
- Start near the baseline and sweep up into the tall curve with a small loop at the top.
- Come down and round out the large lower bowl, curling back to finish.
How to write a lowercase g in cursive
The lowercase g starts like an a. Make a round bowl (curving counter-clockwise), then instead of stopping, carry the stroke straight down below the baseline into a loop that swings back up. The lowercase cursive G is a bowl on top with a looping tail below the line.
- Make the round bowl first, curving counter-clockwise.
- Carry the stroke down below the baseline into a loop, then swing back up to exit.
Common mistakes to avoid
Let the tail drop below the line: the g is a descender, so its loop goes below the baseline. Do not stop it on the line.
Close the bowl: make sure the round top of the g meets its own stroke, or it can look like a q or a y.
g vs q: the tail of a g loops back to the left, while a q usually kicks out to the right. Watch the tail direction.
Keep the bowl round: a good cursive G lowercase has a smooth, round body, not a pointed one.
Joining the cursive g
The lowercase g exits from its tail back up to the baseline, so it links into the next letter. Practise the cursive G in real words: go, dog, egg, green, bigger. Notice how the loop carries the pen back up ready for the next letter.

Why does the cursive g go below the line?
