How to write a capital D in cursive
The cursive D capital starts at the top with a tall downstroke, then loops out to the right in a large curve that comes back to meet the stem near the baseline. Written in one motion, the capital D in cursive looks like a spine with a big bowl wrapped around it.
- Start at the top and pull the spine straight down to the baseline.
- Loop up and out to the right, curve around, and bring the stroke back to close the bowl at the bottom.
How to write a lowercase d in cursive
The lowercase d is a tall letter that starts like an a. Make a round bowl first (curving counter-clockwise), then take the stroke straight up to the top line for the tall stem, and bring it back down to the baseline to exit. The lowercase cursive D is one continuous stroke.
- Make the round bowl first, curving counter-clockwise.
- Stroke up to the top line for the tall stem, then back down to exit toward the next letter.
Common mistakes to avoid
d vs b: the bowl of a d is on the left of the tall stem. If it is on the right, you have written a b. This is the most common d mistake.
Keep the stem tall: the lowercase d reaches all the way to the top line, like b, h and l.
Close the bowl: make the round part meet the stem so the cursive D does not look like c and l stuck together.
One motion: the bowl flows straight into the stem without lifting the pen.
Joining the cursive d
The lowercase d exits from the baseline on the right, so it joins smoothly into the next letter. Practise the cursive D in real words: dog, day, add, hand, ready. Watch how the exit stroke of the d carries into whatever follows.
